The TSUNAA - Ocean of Soul Alumni Chapter is pleased to announce that the Ronald B. Thornton Scholarship (RBT) is now available online for the upcoming 2024-2025, school year!
Each year the TSUNAA Ocean of Soul Alumni Chapter (OOSAC) awards scholarships to three deserving undergraduate students who are currently enrolled at Texas Southern University and are members of the TSU’s Ocean of Soul Marching Band. The RBT Scholarship only pertains to sophomores (31-60 hrs.), juniors (61-90 hrs.), and seniors (91-120 hrs.) whose musical desire is to continue participating in the Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul Marching Band Program. Scholarship recipients are awarded based on their musicianship, academic performance, and essay submission that demonstrates “Excellence in Achievement”. The three RBT Scholarships total at $1,000 max per student, which are divided evenly between the fall and spring semesters.
Students are required to submit a two-page essay (chosen from the list of topics below), two letters of recommendation, an unofficial transcript, and a professional headshot photo of the applicant. (The letters of recommendation must be completed by a current or former Texas Southern University Music Director and a community member (i.e. - teacher, principal, pastor, counselor, manager, or director) which includes a valid phone number and email address.)
The applicant’s essay, headshot photo, unofficial transcript, and reference letters must be submitted to the Ocean of Soul Alumni Chapter’s Scholarship Committee no later than FRIDAY, MAY 31st (The last day of the spring semester 24').

(PSA: Any application that is incomplete or submitted after 12:00AM on FRIDAY, MAY 31st, will not be considered for the RBT scholarship this term.)
Since the Ronald B. Thornton Scholarship awards are contingent upon university enrollment, students are strongly encouraged to complete their Texas Southern enrollment process prior to the 2024-2025, Fall and Spring Semesters. Scholarship recipients must be registered for part- or full-time classes at TSU during the time of the RBT selection process.
